Rev Jay G. Smith began serving Randolph-Macon Academy as Director of Planned Giving April 2, 2012, on a part-time basis. In addition to serving as pastor of a church in Richmond, VA, Rev Smith traveled throughout the Tri-State area visiting alumni and talking to them about making a gift to R-MA in their estate plans.
In February of 2015, Rev Smith retired from the pulpit ministry and began working full-time at R-MA, picking up the additional responsibility for Alumni Outreach working with class agents for reunion planning. In July 2017, the Development Office changed structure and gained an additional staff person. Rev Smith became the Major Gifts and Planned Giving Officer. He and his wife, Helen, reside in Winchester, VA, and have four adult children and seven grandchildren.
A 1974 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Rev Smith was a Naval Flight Officer and Mission Commander in the EA-6B and instructor at the Consolidated Electronic Warfare School, Corry Station, Florida. Upon leaving active duty, Rev Smith was employed as a manufacturing engineer with IBM in Burlington, VT, where he made an inter-service transfer to the Air Force Reserve and flew as a Weapons System Operator with the Vermont Green Mountain Boys (VTANG) for three years. Feeling the call to full-time ministry, Rev Smith moved his family to Fort Worth, TX, and attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary graduating with a Master of Divinity in May 1993. He has served churches in New Jersey and Virginia. He also served for three years as an Associate Director of Planned Giving with The Salvation Army and two years as Senior Procurement Manager for Operation Blessing.
Rev Smith is a member of the Virginia Gift Planning Council and the Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP), and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).
