AP Courses: What's in a Name?

We met with a group of Randolph-Macon Academy parents and “past parents” (people whose students graduated from our school) about three weeks ago.  Our purpose was to talk about how we could better market Randolph-Macon Academy in the Winchester area, but in the course of the discussions, the parents spent a lot of time telling us how our small private school had changed their children’s lives. It was an uplifting experience, of course, but our president, Maj Gen Henry Hobgood, and I were a bit puzzled by one of the comments at his table.


$1,000 and 1,000 Cranes for Japan

On March 11, 2011, the strongest earthquake on record (according to the Red Cross) occurred just off the coast of Japan, devastating the small nation. Soon after, a giant tsunami ravished the country, destroying buildings, landscapes, and roads…but even more shocking was the toll on human life. Over 26,000 people were either dead or unaccounted for more than six weeks after the quake struck.

In response to the crisis in Japan, Randolph-Macon Academy’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) immediately voted to donate $1000 for a shelter box. Stephen Latham, the faculty advisor of R-MA’s NHS, presented the check to the Linden Rotary Club on March 16, 2011. Then, NHS and Cadets-In-Action teamed with the Community Service program for a bake sale and origami sale on Thursday, March 24, just before spring break, raising another $1,000 for the relief efforts.

On February 23, 2011, I took one of my many flight lessons in which I practiced take-offs and landings. This was my fourth or fifth time doing this lesson because it can be very challenging to perfect the art.

At first in the lesson I went out into the practice area and did a few clearing turns and then went into a steep turn to the left and then repeated the first two steps and did one to the right. I then proceeded to simulate an engine fire and went through the steps that I would have to perform if this event would actually occur.

I’ve read and heard that blogs entries should be informative, short, entertaining, short, frequent, short, and to the point. Apparently, the most important thing is that it is…short, with short being 300 words or less.

Hmm. I write fiction in my spare time. I’m not sure I’m capable of being short. But I’ll give it a shot.
