R-MA provides ground school instruction for those students interested in obtaining their private pilot certificate. The class meets during first period every day. The course uses the Jeppesen-Sanderson Private Pilot materials.
The ground school takes several field trips each year and brings in guest speakers. Trips are taken to the Potomac Consolidated TRACON, the ProJet Aviation Expo, and the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. We feel that it is important to introduce students to all careers in aviation. Guest speakers such as air traffic controllers, mechanics, and meteorologists are brought in to discuss their professions and required schooling.
Through generous donations from former students and parents, the flight program purchased a Dell XPS gaming computer to run a flight simulator. The simulator is used to teach students concepts such as traffic pattern procedures, aerodynamics, and systems. It is also fun to play on during rainy afternoons, when scheduled flights are cancelled!
