Science
R-MA Science Department is full of teachers who love to make their students think. From the rules of "Hubbyland" to in-depth discussions and experiments, students develop a love of science in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Anatomy & Physiology.
Classroom teaching stimulates an interest in research and investigation, and laboratory periods present opportunities for individual and group experimentation. Both inductive and deductive techniques are used to aid students in understanding principles and solving problems.
With the smaller class sizes, teachers have the opportunity to make the course a unique experience for each and every student. And they are available to students for extra help, not just in the classroom, but at the end of the day as well.
"One thing I love about teaching at R-MA," said chemistry teacher Dick Widell, "is that I can speed up and slow down the courses so that no one gets left behind, and yet the classes are small enough that I can still challenge the students who are catching on right away."
The R-MA science teachers are a well-loved group known for their fun. For example, Mr. Michael Baird's class bought him a fire extinguisher to see if it would propel him in an office chair. Mr. Baird and Mr. Eric Dudley coach the JETS team for competition each year. The students in biology create pictures of genetic crossovers using what they learn about dominate and recessive genes. Mr. Mitch Hubbard, posts the "Useless Fact of the Day" and has created an entirely different environment in his classroom, where the rules are posted in a fun, thought-provoking way that make students view their education a bit differently. We encourage you to come meet these wonderful teachers at our next open house or on a personal tour!
