Flight Program Overview

Randolph-Macon Academy's Cessna 172 takes to the air with a student pilot at the controls. R-MA's flight program is unique among secondary schools.

Randolph-Macon Academy is proud to offer students the chance to explore the world of aviation.  The flight program teaches young men and women to fly, earn solo wings, and achieve aviation credentials.  As students reach their goals in the program they gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and broaden their career options.

Highlights:

  • Students fly R-MA-owned aircraft, including two Cessna 152s and a Cessna 172.
  • The aircraft are housed year-round inside the William H. Garber Hangar.  (The school’s hangar is named for R-MA graduate and aviation enthusiast William H. Garber ’33.)
  • The hangar is located at Front Royal/Warren County Airport, only six miles from R-MA.
  • The aircraft are maintained in excellent condition and are routinely inspected to meet Federal Aviation Regulations.

The flight training program at R-MA is the only one of its kind at the secondary school level in the United States. The experience not only helps them to achieve excellence as students, but also prepares them for the challenges of life beyond Randolph-Macon Academy.

All incoming students planning on participating in the flight program need to bring a copy of a United States birth certificate or United States passport to registration. If you do not have one, contact the flight director, Laura Abraham, at labraham@rma.edu.
