International Families: How to Apply

A group of international female students on a field trip for their ESL class. How does Randolph-Macon define "International student?"
An international student is any non-US citizen who needs a student visa to attend school in the United States.

How many International students attend Randolph-Macon Academy?
International students represent 19% of the student body. Our current students come from: Burundi, Canada, China, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, S. Korea, and Vietnam.

Is there a special International student application?
Yes. We highly encourage International students to apply online. You can also download the forms.

Does the "School Record Report" apply to me?
Yes, a school official must send your official transcript, including courses in progress, along with the school report. You must send the originals as well as a translated copy.

Is there an application checklist I can use?
Yes. Here is a checklist that should be helpful. You must send us the following:
  • International application
  • $200 nonrefundable application fee
  • A one page essay (double-spaced) on why you want to attend R-MA
  • Photo of yourself
  • Teacher Recommendation #1 and Teacher Recommendation #2
  • School Record Report/official transcripts (Explanations of courses are appreciated.)
  • Standardized test scores
  • Immunization records and birth certificate and/or passport
  • Interview. This will be scheduled upon receipt of the above-documents.
Do foreign applicants have deadlines?
R-MA has a priority deadline of February 1st for international students. We are on a space-available basis after that. Please contact the admissions office if you are still interested after the deadline date.
It normally takes two to four months after you receive acceptance papers to obtain an interview at your consulate office to obtain a visa.  NOTE: R-MA does not accept international students into the senior class.

If I just want to apply for Fall, is it necessary that I also come to Summer School?
Summer School is mandatory for students who score lower than a 40 on the SLEP test.

Is there financial aid?
Financial aid is not available to International students.

Do I need to take the TOEFL or SLEP Exams?
Because core courses are taught in English, English proficiency is required. If you have the test scores, please provide them. You will also be tested upon arrival as part of orientation.

Do I need to have a guardian based in the United States?
Yes!  All international students must have a US residential guardian and up-to-date contact information must be provided on the application. You must keep a US guardian every year that you attend R-MA. Guardians must live within 2-3 hours from campus and must be available to accompany students to registration and take students during breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Winter and Spring Break).

Do I need medical insurance?
It is required that ALL students at R-MA have medical insurance. For more information on obtaining medical insurance through our school, please contact Mrs. Knick (dknick@rma.edu or 1-540-636-5488).

Now that I have been accepted, what comes next?
  • Sign and return the student enrollment form that was sent with the acceptance letter along with the $3,000 matriculation fee.
  • Submit up-to-date immunization records if they have not already been provided. NOTE: I-20's will not be issued until immunization records have been received.
  • Once this information is received your I-20 will be issued.
