Graduation Requirements

Graduates of R-MA, a college-prep military boarding school in Virginia, toss their hats up into the air after being dismissed for the final time.

Randolph-Macon Academy offers three diplomas: Advanced College Preparatory Diploma, College Preparatory Diploma, and International Diploma.

Advanced College Preparatory Diploma

The advanced college preparatory diploma rigorously prepares students for entrance to the most competitive colleges and universities and requires 24 credits:

Aerospace Science* (required each year)
English 4 units
Mathematics 4 units
Social Studies 3 units
Religious Studies 1 unit
Physical Education 2 units
Science 4 units
Foreign Language

3 units in 1 language
(or 2 units in 2)

Visual and Performing Arts 1 unit (beginning with Class of 2011)
Computer Literacy .5 unit
Electives  2 units

 

College Preparatory Diploma

A regular college preparatory diploma meets the necessary requirements to graduate from high school and go to college; it requires 22 credits:

 

Aerospace Science* (required each year)
English 4 units
Mathematics 3 units
Social Studies 3 units
Religious Studies 1 unit
Physical Education 2 units
Science 3 units
Foreign Language

2 units in 1 language
(3 units recommended)

Visual and Performing Arts 1 unit (beginning with Class of 2011)
Computer Literacy .5 unit
Electives 3 units

 
International Diploma

The international diploma is designed for international students who require English as a Second Language training as indicated by their achievement level on the Secondary Level English Proficiency Test. It requires 23 credits:

 

Aerospace Science* (required each year)
ESL or Mainstream English

4 units

(Must complete at least one year of mainstream English at English 10 level or higher.)
Mathematics 3 units
Social Studies

3 units

(Transferred, mainstream or ESL level - must include World History, US History, and American Government.  Students taking mainstream English are required to take mainstream social studies.)
Religious Studies 1 unit
Physical Education 2 units
Science 3 units
Foreign Language

2 units

(Documentation should show that the student has passed two academic courses in that language.)
Visual and Performing Arts 1 unit (beginning with Class of 2011)
Computer Literacy .5 unit
Electives 4 units
 

International students completing mainstream U.S. Government and two years of mainstream English, one of which must be English 12, will receive the College Preparatory diploma.

*Randolph-Macon Academy requires these courses, but they are not required by regional or national accrediting agencies.
