Varsity Soccer Just Shy of Victory

The varsity soccer team produced one of its best displays of the season as the team continues to progress and develop, but fell just short with a 3-2 loss away to Seton.

Lucas Costa ‘17 opened the scoring for the Jackets with a stunning overhead kick that had the Seton players and the coach congratulating him on a “goal of the season”. Seton managed to even up the scoring later in the half to head in 1-1 at the break.

In the second half, R-MA dominated for large parts of the game and scored a second goal to lead 2-1. With the clock ticking down and Seton short of options, an R-MA victory against a team that won 3-0 against us at home earlier this season looked like the most likely outcome.

However, Seton managed to get a lucky break as the ball bounced awkwardly in the penalty area and snatched an equalizer five minutes from time.  This equalizer was followed by a winner close to the final whistle as their striker pushed right through his marker in what the referee adjudged to be a fair challenge. This challenge left the defender on his back and the striker took advantage of the opportunity to slot home unopposed.

Despite the loss, the Jackets remain in buoyant mood, knowing they are playing at the level of the top teams in the division as they continue to get stronger with each game.

The boys are hungry for the next game at home to Wakefield with one eye on the tournament at the end of the season that remains the focus of their build-up.
