Holding the Colors

FRPD receives training from Randolph-Macon Academy cadets on color guard maneuvers

The Front Royal Police Department (FRPD) has set out to create its own Color Guard to proudly wield the American colors. Luckily for the FRPD, there is an Academy in their town with a color guard that has proudly held the colors of the United States for 100 years. On Thursday, September 21st, several members of the FRPD visited the R-MA Color Guard to learn the basics, regulations, and movements of a color guard.

Cadet Captain Grayson Galeone ‘18, commander of the R-MA color guard, kicked things off with a presentation that covered everything from the history of color guard to its maneuvers and regulations. Galeone addressed the presence of flags in battle since the ancient Egyptians and explained that over time, the unarmed flag bearers became easy targets in battle. They were assigned protection, or guards, to help them survive the battle as they proudly held their nation’s colors.

R-MA’s Group Commander, Victoria Voellm ‘18, presented a three-minute video demonstrating the maneuvers of a color guard that she commanded herself during competition last year. She noted the synchronization of steps, the positioning of the American flag versus the Virginia State flag, the eight-count wheel executions, proper commands, etc.

At the end of the presentation, R-MA color guard members Cadet Master Sergeant Ian Mounts and Cadet Master Sergeant Nathan Stewart presented a gift to the FRPD officers: two rifles to help them start the Front Royal Police Department Color Guard.

Once the presentation concluded, the cadets of the R-MA color guard escorted the police officers outside to begin a lesson on basic drill steps and maneuvers. At the end of the presentation, Master Sergeant Tina Laing, USAF, Retired, told the members of the FRPD, “We wish the best of luck to the Front Royal Police Department on your new color guard and thank you for you selfless service to our community.”
