Lady Jackets Add to Their Championship Titles
5/10/13 Randolph-Macon Academy hosted the DAC II Girls' Soccer Tournament Championship. The Lady Jackets earned a bid to the semi-finals when they clinched the regular season championship. On Thursday, 5/9, R-MA secured a 4-1 win over Quantico School to advance to the finals. On Friday, The Yellow Jackets kicked off against the Owls from Wakefield Country Day School; the winner would be crowned the tournament champion.
The game proved to be equally competitive as neither team took a demanding lead. R-MA put points on the score board first when McKenzie Marshall '13 scored unassisted. However, the Owls later answered back to tie the score 1-1. The score remained equal until Marshall dished out a great pass to Misse Odoom '13 who shot and beat the opponent's keeper. Leading into the half, the Jackets were up 2-1.
The teams split possession and each squad had several opportunities to score. Unfortunately, WCDS sent a shot soaring high from about 25 yards out and over the R-MA goalkeeper. The scoreboard read 2-2.
The two teams finished regulation time with a 2-2 tie. The game was sent into two 10 minute overtime periods, and neither team scored. This only meant one thing: penalty kicks would decide who would be crowned champion.
Each team chose 5 kickers that would alternate taking penalty kicks (PKs). It was a thrilling round of PKs as each team had a couple misses, however, Anastasia Voellm '13 not only saved three PKs as the R-MA goalie, but she also took the final shot that could possibly decide the game. Voellm found the back of the net on her PK which turned out to be the game-winning goal. R-MA Lady Jackets soccer team had captured the DAC II Tournament Championship for the third time in four years!
