Randolph-Macon Academy English Department chairperson Robert Davies has a particular interest in British literature, which his students begin to appreciate their freshman year with the Charles Dickens and the Victorian Era MLA research project. His classes are Honors English 9, Honors English 10, and Honors The Arts in Society.
Davies says that his 23 years as a teacher, 18 at R-MA, have allowed him to "communicate my enjoyment of reading and writing to young people and to support their social and intellectual development. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of converting many non-readers to readers and of taking committed readers to the next level."
As department chair, he has worked to develop summer reading, promote creative writing and the literary magazine, strengthen grammar instruction, develop composition rubrics, and better coordinate middle school and upper school curricula. The double English Program gives students in grades 6 through 10 two courses of English instruction each day: Literature and Vocabulary; Grammar and Composition. His major extra-curricular activities are the Byzantium chapter of the National English Honor Society, the Alpha Readers student-teacher book club, Poetry Slams, community reading, and journalism.
"Today’s SAT is two-thirds verbal skills, and reading and writing are critical to high school and college success. As a result of this program," says Davies, "our students show strong growth in verbal skills."
Davies is a recipient of the annual R-MA Parents’ Association "Teacher of the Year" award. He also received R-MA’s "Teacher of the Year" award for 2005-06. In addition, he has twice received the Educator of Distinction Award presented by Dr. Claes Nobel of the National Society of High School Scholars.
