Randolph-Macon Academy
Recognized as a "Top School" by Virginia Living

Front Royal, VA—  For the second consecutive year, Randolph-Macon Academy has been named one of Virginia’s Top Schools by Virginia Living. The announcement came in Virginia Living “State of Education 2014,” which hit stands on September 5, 2014. The special bound-in supplement to Virginia Living’s October 2014 issue recognizes schools for excellence and innovation in one of five categories, as selected by Virginia Living’s editors. Randolph-Macon Academy has been recognized in the category of Science, Math & Technology for its unique flight program.

Randolph-Macon Academy has been named one of Virginia Living's Top Schools. The flight program at Randolph-Macon Academy is the only private high school program in the U.S. where the instructors are school faculty members and the planes are owned by the school. About thirty to forty of Randolph-Macon Academy students participate in the optional flight program each year, through flight lessons, ground school, or a combination of the two. On average, five to eight students achieve their first solo flight each year—often before they can drive a car—and another two to three earn their private pilot certification.

“We are honored to be selected as a top school by Virginia Living,” said R-MA President Major General Maury Forsyth, USAF Retired. “Our flight instructors, Laura Abraham and Ryan Koch, do a marvelous job teaching our young men and women to fly. You won’t find a pair of more patient, conscientious instructors anywhere in the country.”

In addition to being an optional program during the regular school year, flight lessons are also available as a four-week summer camp at Randolph-Macon Academy.

Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational day and boarding school for students in grades 6 through 12.  Students in grades 9-12 participate in R-MA’s 91st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) and have the option to participate in a flight program. R-MA is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is located in Front Royal, VA.
